RULES OF THE DOJO

The concept of courtesy is central to the Martial Arts. Courtesy is shown to all people, instructors and each other.

  1. Arrive 5-10 minutes prior to class time.

  2. Stop and bow at the front door when entering and leaving the school saying “Hello Sir/Ma’am; Good-bye Sir/Ma’am”.

  3. All instructors and black belts should be addressed as Mr., Mrs, Miss or Ms. or as Sir/Ma’am.

  4. Always show respect to your instructors and fellow students.

  5. You should not be on the mat before/after class without an instructor’s permission.

  6. Bow when coming onto the mat and when leaving the mat, (facing the flag).

  7. Make sure you are focused and ready to start class the minute you hit the mat. No Leaving/No Excuses!

  8. At the beginning and ending of each class you should quickly line up in belt rank order, juniors in the front and adults in the back, staggering squares.

  9. If a student must leave during class for any reason, the student must ask permission from the instructor.

  10. If you are late coming to class, prepare for class as quickly as possible and then stand at attention by the edge of the mat for the instructor to invite you on the mat verbally or with a gesture. At that point bow and enter taking the rear position in class.

  11. While seated on the floor, legs should be crossed, hands folded in your lap or on your knees and your back should be straight.

  12. Gum chewing is not allowed in class.

  13. Keep your uniform neat, clean and oder free.

  14. Wear a complete uniform specific for your rank. Karate t-shirts are allowed during open gym and in the summer months only.

  15. If you need to straighten your uniform during class, always turn away from the flags and your instructor.

  16. Each student must be well groomed at all times. Keep your hands and feet clean with nails trimmed to help prevent injury while working with others.

  17. For your own safety, please refrain from wearing jewelry in class. Not only can earrings, bracelets and necklaces be a danger to you, but rings can be a danger to fellow students. Please know that you wear these items at your own risk.

  18. Students must wear a traditional clean white uniform to all promotion tests.

  19. Absolutely no shoes on the mats. If you wish to wear karate shoes, they may only be worn in class.

  20. Please place your shoes in the shoe rack and your coats on a hook.

  21. This is your dojo/school and you should take pride in it. Please help in the weekly cleaning chores.

  22. Tuition is due the first week of every month. Late fees are applied after that date.

  23. We follow the local school inclement weather policy during bad weather. If the schools are closed due to bad weather, we will be closed also.

  24. To ensure that our students have good quality products, students may only wear or use equipment purchased at JRMA.

  25. Only instructors are allowed behind the office/desk area.

    Rules for our parents:

  26. Spectators must not talk loudly or take students’ attention away from class.

  27. Only POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT is allowed.

  28. Please help your child focus by not shouting into the classroom while class is in session. This not only disrupts your child, but also the other students in class.

  29. Photographing your child in class is allowed. (We’d love to see the pictures you take, please post them on our Facebook page JRMA Family Martial Arts.)

Practice at home! To improve a skill, you must learn the basic motions and practice them constantly. Always remember: You perform like you practice.
